6 free tools that stop Windows 10 from spying on everything you do - www.yahoo.com/tech/s/6-free-tools-stop-windows-10-spying-everything-133022555.htmlMicrosoft’s new Windows 10 platform has received quite a reception from bloggers and tech journalists. More importantly, it has been received with open arms by consumers eager to wipe Windows 8 from their desktops and laptops, and start fresh. A fresh start is exactly what Windows 10 has given Microsoft, but it’s not all good news. While the new software is certainly a huge step in the right direction, some serious privacy concerns have been raised following the revelation that Windows 10 may be spying on almost everything you do. DON’T MISS: 5 killer Galaxy Note 5 features you won’t find in any iPhoneMicrosoft has indeed played fast and loose with users’ privacy in Windows 10. By default, the new operating system is configured to track usage, and even to monitor your files and folders in some cases. Just look at how scary Microsoft’s privacy statement is. Features like this aren’t always a bad thing, but opting people in by default is hardly a user-friendly policy. In an earlier post, we told you about a few things you can do to opt out of many of Microsoft’s tracking features in Windows 10. Since this is such a widely publicized issue, however, there are already plenty of tools you can use to help simplify the process of taking your privacy back in Windows 10. And in a recent post, gHacks supplied a nice quick comparison of six different options. Below you’ll find six different apps covered, along with brief descriptions. Click on the name of any app to download it. Destroy Windows 10 SpyingThis is a fairly basic program that allows users to enable a wide range of privacy settings in one simple interface, rather than having to dig around through Windows 10’s settings. Disable Win TrackingThis app is similar in intent to Destroy Windows 10 Spying, but with only four options, its focus is far more narrow. What You Need to Know About Microsoft's Spying Ways - www.freedomsphoenix.com/News/183372-2015-09-15-what-you-need-to-know-about-microsofts-spying-ways.htm?From=NewsI had a conversation the other day with the best and most knowledgeable computer guy I know. After discussing privacy threats, he made this statement: Everybody buying a Windows computer today is a traitor to humanity. Now, this is a very technically oriented guy, and he quickly agreed with me that most people don't have a clue about such things. Still, the primary point stands: Whenever any of us buys a Microsoft product, we are supporting the tools of our own slavery. Here's the problem: Because people keep buying Windows, computer manufacturers are forced to buy and provide "Licensed for Windows" products. And those products include a lot of bad things. As I've pointed out before, Microsoft cooperates massively with the NSA to provide them with records of your thoughts and actions. But the problem my friend referred to was something else… something called TPM, Trusted Platform Module. It's a little chip in your computer that is, in my friend's words, "way evil." Microsoft's goal (with Apple following in their footsteps, by the way) is to kill the general purpose computer. Combining this Trusted Platform Module with Windows provides something that Microsoft and their government pals have been after for a number of years: something called Digital Hygiene. If that sounds slightly Nazi-ish to you, I'm glad, because it is. Digital Hygiene means that unless Microsoft approves of all the software on your computer – or any number of other factors, to be determined in the future – your Internet access will be instantly cut-off. Here's what Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Trustworthy Computing was quoted as saying (by multiple sources, at a conference in Berlin) in 2010: Infected computers should be quarantined from the Internet, and PCs should have to prove themselves clean with a digital health certificate in order to access the Internet. Now they are doing it, and my friend is right to raise an alarm. More and more computers cannot run anything except a "signed" operating system – signed by Microsoft or the hardware manufacturer. In other words, if they haven't given the A-OK that what you're using is as it should be, you get cut off. Moreover, the "we certify it or what you bought won't work" extends to every program you run. This is already inside any computer that is sold as "Ready for Windows 8." When you install Windows 8, these capabilities are automatically activated. Once that's done, you will need major computer skills to wipe it off your machine and install something better. What this all means is that, in the not too distant future – if you use a Windows machine – you might be limited to a small selection of pre-approved, pre-sanitized, privacy-questionable programs. And I can almost guarantee all the tools we use now to protect ourselves from the reach of digital snoops will be blocked too, leaving us naked and vulnerable. But there is a solution. Buy a Linux machine. Not only will it protect you against the above, but it'll be cheaper, and doesn't have all the problems that Windows does (e.g., the blue screen of death). Here's how to get started: Buy an older model computer with an AMD processor. They're cheaper and still offer WAY more power than you're likely to need. Just be sure to ask if the thing comes with "vPro," "CompuTrace," or a "TPM chip." If it has any of these, don't buy it! Install Linux Mint on it; a user-friendly version of the program. Most likely, unless you're technically minded, you'll need to enlist the help of your local independent computer retailer. Do so – they will be a great resource as you shift to a non-Microsoft world. Remember, Microsoft is a traitor to their customers, relying upon their ignorance to keep the game going. Don't be their zombies! Read Full StoryReported By Ernest Hancock

Opt Out of Interest-Based AdvertisingConsumer Opt-out - www.networkadvertising.org/choices/NAI members are committed to transparency and choice. The NAI opt-out tool was developed in conjunction with our members and the DAA for the express purpose of allowing consumers to "opt out" of the Interest-Based Advertising delivered by our members on Web pages using cookies. Some NAI members may start using non-cookie technologies as stated in NAI’s Guidance on the use of non-cookie technologies. To learn more about non-cookie technologies, or how to opt out of these technologies, please go to our FAQ on Non-Cookie Technologies. Some of the ads you receive on Web pages are customized based on predictions about your interests generated from your visits over time and across different web-sites. This type of ad customization — sometimes called "interest-based" or “online behavioral” advertising — is enabled through various technologies, including browser cookies as well as other non-cookie technologies. Such online advertising helps support the free content, products and services you get online. Learn more about Interest-Based Advertising. Using the tools on this page, you can opt out from receiving Interest-Based Advertising from some or all of our participating member companies that use HTTP cookies on your computer browser for Interest-Based Advertising. For now, you may use this page to: Find out which participating companies conduct Interest-Based Advertising on your browser using cookies on your browser; See all NAI members and learn more about their advertising and privacy practices; Check whether you’ve already opted out from member companies that are using cookies for Interest-Based Advertising; Opt out of cookie-enabled interest-based advertising by some or all members, using opt-out cookies to store your preferences in your browser; or Use the “Choose All Companies” feature to opt out in one step from all currently participating NAI member companies that use cookies on your browser for Interest-Based Advertising. Following an opt out, the NAI member companies listed below cease collecting and using data from across web domains owned or operated by different entities for the purpose of customizing advertising based on preferences or interests known or inferred from the data collected (Interest Based Advertising or IBA) when those NAI member companies use cookies. Opting out does not mean you will no longer receive online advertising. It does mean that the NAI member company or companies from which you opted out will no longer customize ads based on your interests and web usage patterns using cookie-based technology.

Successful Search Engine Optimization Using WordPress - www.marketing-mojo.com/blog/successful-search-engine-optimization-using-wordpress/?utm_source=GooglePlus&utm_medium=postI have been using WordPress for a looooooooong time. I first dipped my toes into blogging in the early 2000s. Before I knew it, I was was blogging about all my favorite stuff, tech, Jeeps, camping, and food. Given a busy career, family, and a generally non-committal attitude towards blogging, I would go in mad sprees of several posts a week, only to let my blog gather dust in long stretches in between. Around 2005, I switching to WordPress as my blogging platform of choice and giddily installed it on my server. I found it to be a better experience, and it’s only improved since. Bacon Soap, available at Think Geek Yes, this is a real product available at Think Geek. As WordPress started to mature beyond a blogging platform to a full fledged content management system, I started to explore using it for client sites. Ask any web developer how they feel about doing content updates to a client’s site. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. We want to spend our time developing elegant solutions and creating great sites. WE DO NOT want to spend 11ty billion hours copying and pasting 11ty billion lines of copy about your new product descriptions for your latest product line of bacon flavored soaps. I mean, smelling like bacon IS AWESOME, but copying and pasting text is just flat boring. In addition, clients don’t want to have to pay developer rates to move around some words. WordPress has done a respectable job of keeping up with SEO trends. Sometimes, you need to go a little deeper or rely on a third-party plugin to do it right. WordPress Core Just to be clear, I’m talking about the self-hosted version of WordPress that you can download and install on your own server from WordPress.org. Most of the stuff I will be going over applies to blogs hosted at WordPress.com, but I’m not fully familiar with what all features are shared between the two platforms. WordPress has taken SEO seriously for quite a while now. You can read their full documentation on SEO on their site. Here’s the short and dirty of WordPress SEO features: Meta tag support Links features that help bots index posts, pages, and categories Flexible permalinks that allow for the best URL structure for your organization Pingbacks that notify an article’s author if someone links to their article Support for title and alt tags in images Even with all these improvements, there is still room for improvement. Plugins To get the most out of SEO in WordPress, though, a plugin is required to give more control to the author. What features should make up a good SEO plugin? The site is structured so that it is easily crawled. Proper tagging is used such as titles, descriptions, and header tags. Content is indexed or indexable (that should be) Auto bacon soap content creation (wouldn’t it be lovely is the CMS just wrote your content for you?). The search engine optimization plugin scene for WordPress has generally been dominated by All in One SEO and Yoast SEO plugins. Both offer paid “pro” versions of their plugins, but for this article we will focus on the free versions that most folks end up using. I have used both over the years and currently have clients using both plugins. In the end, I normally recommend the Yoast SEO plugin. Most of my reasoning is from personal experience, but if you want a true data driven head to head comparison, check out this article by Dan Shure. Generally, I have found that the Yoast plugin is better supported, easier to use, less likely to introduce bugs into your site and releases new features sooner than All in One. It’s easy to edit meta tags and Open Graph settings, and it generates a nice dynamic XML sitemap file. Page Speed I have written a metric ton on the topic of page speed in the past (uno, dos, tres, cuatro), so I would be crazy not to mention it here. Personally, I think WordPress falls short on addressing this. WordPress tends to be taxing on the server, so I imagine a performance-driven rewrite will come in the next few years. In the meantime, make sure you use every trick in the book to keep serving times down such as GZIP compression, file minification, server request reduction, and caching. Image size is also a problem. Maximum upload size can vary based on your server configuration, but generally it is too large for most uses. Almost every WordPress site that I have performed a technical SEO audit on has wildly gross image optimization problems. Mostly, I suggest the Compress JPEG & PNG images plugins from the fine folks at tinypng.com. The optimization happens on the fly and in the background as your authors upload images to the site. The free version handles up to 500 uploads a month, which is usually plenty for most of our clients. For example, the bacon soap image above was already pretty well optimized at 27K, but the plugin managed to squeeze it down another 7K! Wrap Up WordPress on its own does a decent job of tackling search engine optimization issues. To get full control, a good SEO plugin will go a long way to get your fresh, bacon-smelling content ranking.

Save Time with Gmail's Canned Responses - birgitjurock.blogspot.ca/2016/01/save-time-with-gmails-canned-responses.htmlHey all you Gmail users, do you know what "canned responses" are and how to use "canned responses"? I am using Canned Responses for year, but notice that many of the Gmail users have never heard about. Canned Responses is one of my BEST Time Savers, and also it seems one of the BEST kept Secrets. With Canned Responses you can pre-write email, for example I am using it for my "welcome to my team" or pre-written "canned" follow up emails, if I want to add a more personal note then just using my autoresponders. Here is how you can set it up very easily. Go to your GMAIL, and go to SETTINGS. 1. Click the Labs tab (in your settings). find Canned Responses, 2. click the Enable radio button to enable Canned Responses, scroll down and click Save Changes. 3. Compose an email message you'd like to use over and over again (e.g. a welcome email to your new team member), and then click the arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the message window. You can also google it or search on Youtube for a "how to set up 'Canned Responses' video. Hope this SUPER time saver Tip helps you too :-) To Your Success!
